It's not uncommon for emotional trauma to happen along our journey. It can be over came and make you stronger; that is a stronger mother, father, husband, wife, business partner and etc. However, it can be mentally debilitating, if there are no support systems and you're not informed. Being informed on how to deal with emotional trauma should be priority for your behavioral health. NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness—DC Chapter) Washington, DC is one resource for that.
Every Wednesday NAMI's Washington, DC chapter has a free support group. There you will have access to NAMI specialist, community peers and family members. It is an open forum of acceptance, respect and mutual understanding. NAMI DC has been serving individuals with lived experience of mental illness and their families in the Nation's capital for more than 37 years.
I had anxiety leading up to the event. Not sure why - I attended plenty group sessions in the past. maybe it was the fact I was waiting 30 minutes out front for the doors to open, probably because there were some great happenings during the day or the weather. Who knows - How informative and reinvigorating the meeting was is the relevant part. A major takeaway was learning from a medical lens the stages someone should go through for a healthy emotional trauma recovery.
What is emotional trauma ?
As defined by, Esther Giller: "Psychological trauma is the unique individual experience of an event or enduring conditions, in which:
* The individual’s ability to integrate his/her emotional experience is overwhelmed, or
* The individual experiences (subjectively) a threat to life, bodily integrity, or sanity. (Pearlman & Saakvitne, 1995, p. 60)"

How to deal with emotional trauma ?
There are three stages in emotional recovery. Each stage has an effect and need - from a medical lens, here are the stages and needs for each stage.
After having that great NAMI DC meeting, I wanted to share my experience for my readers. Just remember, recovery is a journey and process! Everyone's journey may be different, but there is always hope. Through resilience change can be made. From a psychological lens, the pain will never go away. By utilizing a healthy support system and being informed, we grow stronger to manage the pain. Hopes this helps someone.
