FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Statement Regarding the Recent Killings of Unarmed African Americans

Juanita Price, CEO, Hillcrest Children and Family Center released the following statement on the recent killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. ... If injustice exists anywhere , it is a negative force and is harmful even to places where justice currently exists.”—Martin Luther King Jr., Letter from the Birmingham Jail."

Hillcrest has an annual tradition of celebrating  “Peace and Unity” in May concurrent with the promotion of May as Mental Health Month.   This year we dedicate our tradition to Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd.  We abhor the unmitigated violence of rouge law enforcement officers, we detest private citizens cloaked with racism who deputize themselves and prey on innocent people doing innocent things, and moreover we reject injustice everywhere.

The violence toward innocent people perpetrated by rogue police officers and those pretending to be police officers must stop.  We must all take a firm just stand!  Hillcrest Children and Family Center, having served  in the District of Columbia for 204 years as a behavioral health organization providing hope, advocacy and support for our community,  joins our voice with those who are committed to developing strategies, taking actions, and holding those accountable to end this senseless murder, mayhem, and misery that we are experiencing as a nation.

The drum major of peace reminds us, “ We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny.”  The killings, murder, and cavalier treatment of Black life in these instances, impacts all of us.  We at  Hillcrest implore you to   write a letter, start a petition,  put a sign in your window, vote and moreover commit yourself to promoting  justice, love, peace and unity for all mankind.  We must work for swift justice and systemic change!

The Hillcrest Children and Family Center extends our sincere condolences and prayers to the families of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd (and all of the others) during this difficult time.
